Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE), founded in 1856, is one of the oldest and most distinguished college fraternities in the United States. With a rich history and a commitment to fostering leadership, academic excellence, and lifelong friendships, SAE has made a significant impact on campuses and communities nationwide. Founding and Early History SAE was established on March 9, 1856, at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa by Noble Leslie DeVotie and seven other young men. The founders envisioned a fraternity rooted in loyalty, friendship, and academic achievement. These values remain central to the organization’s mission today. Initially, SAE was a regional fraternity with a stronghold in the Southern United States. It survived the Civil War despite many members enlisting, and it began expanding nationally in the post-war period.
